Vol. 373 No. 5

Written Answers. - Driving Without Insurance.

28.

asked the Minister for Justice having regard to the large number of persons convicted of driving without motor insurance the steps, if any, he proposes to take to eliminate this serious problem.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons convicted of driving without motor insurance for the years 1982 to 1986 inclusive.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 28 and 29 together. Statistics of convictions for driving without insurance are not compiled separately. The composite statistics compiled by the Garda Síochána include the offence of having no insurance with other offences, for example, that of failing, on request, to produce a certificate of insurance at a Garda station within the prescribed period.

For the years 1982 to 1985 the relevant statistics that are available are published in the Commissioner's Annual Report on Crime for those years, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas library. The report for 1986 will be published shortly.

The incidence of uninsured driving is of course a matter of serious concern. I am assured by the Garda authorities that the problem is receiving, and will continue to receive, a high level of Garda attention.
