asked the Minister for Education if the new Minister of State for Science and Technology has been asked to undertake any consideration of the acknowledged need to have a greater emphasis on science and technology in post-primary schools; if so, the terms of reference which have been given to him; if not, if she will ask him to carry out a detailed survey of the teaching of scientific and technological subjects in post-primary schools in consultation with all of the interested parties and to publish a report and recommendation on this vital matter; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I have not made any such request of the Minister of State for Science and Technology.
In so far as post-primary schools are concerned, I am at present examining the scope that exists for giving more attention to science subjects. In this context, as I indicated in a reply to a recent question, I am reviewing recent initiatives in this area. These include a pilot project to encourage the study of physics and chemistry in girls' schools and a requirement that an adequate course of laboratory work be done as part of the Leaving Certificate course in physics or chemistry. I intend to encourage such initiatives and to strengthen them where necessary.
