Vol. 374 No. 4

Written Answers. - Drivers of State Cars.

48.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that the present arrangements in relation to Ministers of State employing their own drivers is a saving to the Exchequer in comparison to previous arrangements where State cars were provided and members of the Garda Síochána were engaged as drivers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am satisified that the present transport arrangement for Ministers of State is less expensive on the Exchequer than the previous arrangement whereby the State provided cars and Garda drivers. Annual savings are estimated to be over £750,000.

In view of the level of savings I see no reason to recommend to the Government that the present system be altered.
