Vol. 374 No. 7

Written Answers. - State Registration of Professional Groups.

199.

asked the Minister for Health the proposals, if any, he has to introduce legislation for a system of State registration for professional groups working in the health services, which would include the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists as these groups are currently not in a position where they are subject to legislative controls; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I have already stated in recent parliamentary replies, I do not propose to introduce legislation for a system of State registration for professional groups (including physiotherapists) who are working in the health services and who are not already subject to legislative controls.

The decision not to introduce such legislation was taken following a review of the need for statutory registration. The conclusion was that protection of the public from unqualified practitioners could not be guaranteed through such legislation.
