Vol. 374 No. 7

Written Answers. - Financial Aid to Fee-charging Schools.

266.

asked the Minister for Education in relation to each of the past three years, the amount of aid given to fee-charging schools categorised by (a) teachers' salaries; (b) capitation grants; and (c) building grants.

The total amount of incremental salary paid to teachers is not accounted for by reference to fee-charging schools and other schools and it would involve an inordinate amount of official time to compile the information requested.

As regards (b) the total paid in 1985 was £607,000 and in 1986 was £435,000. Capitation grants ceased to be paid to fee-charging secondary schools with effect from the commencement of the 1986-87 school year. There was, consequently, no aid given in this category to such schools in the 1987 financial year.

Building grants, under the scheme of building grants to secondary schools, issued to fee-charging secondary schools in the past three years are as follows:

£

1985

1,126,365

1986

1,134,371

1987 (to date)

1,604,895
