Vol. 374 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cabra (Dublin) Schools.

273.

asked the Minister for Education if she will make a statement regarding the alleged non-replacement of two teachers in St. Joseph's School for the Deaf in Cabra, Dublin 7; and the proposals, if any, she has in this respect.

As St. Joseph's School for Hearing Impaired, Cabra, Dublin 7, has more than a full quota of staff as determined by the pupil-teacher ratio applicable to the school, it is not possible to consider any further appointments to the staff at this time. However, the matter of the staffing generally is being kept under constant review in consultation with the school management.

274.

asked the Minister for Education the reason a new school adjacent to St. Joseph's School for the Deaf, Cabra, Dublin 7, has not opened; when it is proposed to move the students into it; when construction of the school was completed; and the reason for the delay in the commencement of construction.

The contract for the new building adjacent to St. Joseph's School for the Deaf, Cabra, Dublin 7, is virtually completed, and it is expected that the premises will in the near future be formally handed over by the contractor to the school authorities. Most of the furniture has been supplied to the school and I understand that the remainder will be delivered over the next two or three weeks, following which the transfer of pupils to the new building can begin.

This project comprises, in addition to the school accommodation, residential units the provision of which were funded by the Department of Health. I understand that the school authorities are in discussion with that Department concerning the staffing and furnishing of these units.
