Valid data on the risk factors associated with Hepatitis B is not available in this country or indeed in western Europe. Epidemiological research is currently being carried out to identify the degree of risk to hospital staff from Hepatitis B. When this research is completed it will be possible to identify more clearly those at risk and to formulate an Hepatitis B immunisation policy. Outbreaks of Hepatitis B in particular institutions are dealt with by the director of community care-medical officer of health for the area, who have responsibility for communicable diseases in their areas.
