Vol. 374 No. 7

Written Answers. - St. James's Hospital.

40.

asked the Minister for Health if it is the intention of the Government to allow the fertility unit at James's Hospital to close; if, given that this is the only such unit in the country offering help to couples; if he will reconsider the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I should point out that the provision of hospital services and the priority accorded to each service at St. James's Hospital is a matter for the St. James's Hospital board. This service was introduced on a limited basis in St. James's Hospital following a decision by the board and all costs involved were met from within the board's non-capital allocation.

It has not been possible to allocate any further exchequer funding to St. James's Hospital in 1987.
