Vol. 374 No. 7

Written Answers. - Residential Care for Mentally Handicapped.

46.

asked the Minister for Health when the remaining residential unit in Saint Michael's House, Glasnevin, Dublin 9 and the units in Cheeverstown, Dublin 12 will be commissioned and staffed in order to reduce the lengthy waiting list for residential places for the mentally handicapped within the community.

My Department is currently exploring various options which might enable Saint Michael's House to bring the remaining unit at Ballymun into operation.

The position in relation to Cheeverstown House is that agreement has been reached between that agency and the Eastern Health Board on the admission of 50 people with a mental handicap from the board's psychiatric service. The initial intake of residents will take place in the coming weeks.

This agreement will assist the health board in exploring further options for the provision of additional places for people from the community through a further redeployment of resources.
