asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate the serving strength by grades, of the former Department of the Public Service and his Department at present up to 30 September 1986 and the amalgamated Department of Finance as at 30 September 1987; and if he will indicate whether any further personnel in his Department are to be reassigned prior to December 1987.

The numbers of staff serving in the former Department of the Public Service and in my Department at 30 September 1986 and the number serving in the amalgamated Department of Finance at 30 September 1987 are set out in a tabular statement which I will be giving to the Deputy.
The Deputy will see from the tabular statement that there has been a reduction in numbers serving between 30 September 1986 and 30 September 1987 of 55. Most of this reduction is attributable to redeployments of staff to the revenue task force and to the Jobsearch programme in the Department of Social Welfare. A further small number of redeployments to other Departments is being investigated at present and it is hoped that they can be effected before the end of year.
