Vol. 374 No. 11

Written Answers. - Departmental Staffing.

52.

asked the Minister for Finance the present position regarding the monthly assessment by his Department of staff needs and surpluses in all Government Departments; and the redeployment which has taken place in the last three months.

My Department's assessment of staff requirements in all Government Departments is a continuous process. One of the sources of information is a monthly return from Departments.

The results to date are reflected in the allocations in the 1988 abridged Estimates volume, in the continuing process of redeployment between Departments to areas of need and in the continuing overall reduction in the Civil Service.

Over the last three months serving staff have been identified for redeployment on 25 occasions. In total, 260 serving staff have been redeployed to the end of October. Of these 80 have been redeployed in the last three months. In addition staff returning from career breaks are being assigned to areas of priority which represents a further transfer of some 25 staff.
