Vol. 374 No. 11

Written Answers. - Staff Numbers.

123.

asked the Minister for Defence the numbers of staff in the public service who have, since 1 August, 1987 (a) applied for early retirement (b) applied for redeployment and (c) applied for career breaks; the numbers of staff who have been accepted by his Department for same; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick West): Until the recent Government decision, the scheme of voluntary redundancy-early retirement was applied only in areas where identified redundancy or overstaffing existed or was reasonably expected to arise and could not be fully met by redeployment. However the matter will now be reviewed in the light of the decision mentioned.

Since 1 August 1987 five officers of the Department have applied for and been granted career breaks.

124.

asked the Minister for Education the numbers of staff in the public service who have, since 1 August, 1987 (a) applied for early retirement (b) applied for redeployment and (c) applied for career breaks; the numbers of staff who have been accepted by her Department for same; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information requested by the Deputy in regard to the staff of my Department is as follows: (a) Twenty-three staff have indicated that they may be interested in availing of the terms of the early retirement-redundancy scheme. However, to date no officer in my Department has availed of the scheme. My Department is at present considering the matter in the context of its overall staffing requirements; (b) No members of staff have applied for redeployment; (c) Two staff members have applied for career breaks since 1 August 1987. These two applications have been approved along with two other applications which had been made in July 1987.
