Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - Lahinch (Clare) School.

230.

asked the Minister for Education if a proposal for one room at Lahinch national school (details supplied) in County Clare, has been received through the Office of Public Works; and if the parents' offer to pay the entire costs has been examined with a view to acceptance.

Consequent on the deterioration of a prefabricated classroom at Lahinch national school, County Clare, which condition was investigated on my Department's behalf by a local representative of the Office of Public Works, my Department made an offer to the school authorities to grant-aid the cost of reinforcing the structure.

By a proposal for one room the Deputy is understood to be referring to the addition of a further permanent classroom to the school, a proposal which my Department consider would not in the long term be justified on the basis of the average enrolment trends. My Department understands from the school authorities that they are unaware of any basis for the belief that the parents are prepared to pay the entire costs of adding such a room, nor is there any reference to such a proposal in the correspondence between my Department and the Office of Public Works.
