Vol. 376 No. 9

Written Answers. - Orthodontic Treatment.

234.

asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the serious concerns expressed by the Cleft Lip and Palate Association of Ireland with regard to a decline in the availability of orthodontic treatment for cleft lip and palate patients; the progress, if any, made arising from the submission for that association made to him on 5 January 1987; and if he will itemise the response to each of the points put forward in that submission.

The orthodontic treatment of children with cleft lip and palate is continuing at Dr. Steeven's Hospital and will transfer to St. James's Hospital shortly under the rationalisation arrangements for the Dublin hospital service. The Dublin Dental Hospital is also providing orthodontic treatment for a small number of cleft palate cases. Unfortunately, neither unit is in a position to accept additional patients at this time. I understand that the consultants associated with the Cleft Lip and Palate Unit have expressed satisfaction with the planned facilities in St. James's Hospital and recognise that they represent a considerable improvement on those available at present. The improved facilities will contribute towards the provision of a better orthodontic service for children with cleft lip and palate.
