Vol. 376 No. 9

Written Answers. - Irish Sudden Infant Death Association.

240.

asked the Minister for Health whether he has reconsidered his decision to reduce his Department's allocation to the Irish Sudden Infant Death Association for 1988 from £10,000 to £1,000.

An allocation to the Irish Sudden Infant Death Association is not made by my Department. However, an annual grant of £1,000 has been paid to the Irish Sudden Infant Death Association since 1983 by the Eastern Health Board. It is open to the association to raise the question of an increase in the level of this grant in 1988 with the Eastern Health Board.

A once-off grant of £10,000 was made available by my Department to the association in 1985 in respect of a research project instituted by the association to assist expansion of community support services to families with children at risk of cot deaths and in respect of a parent support programme. It has not been possible since then due to budgetary constraints for my Department to make a further grant of this nature available to the association.
