Vol. 376 No. 9

Written Answers. - Radioactive Waste Disposal.

245.

asked the Minister for Health the methods whereby radioactive waste from Irish hospitals is being disposed of; if such waste is being exported; whether any such waste is currently being disposed of in domestic waste tipheads; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Radium 226 which is used in the treatment of cancer, is currently stored in Hume Street, St. Anne's, St. Luke's and Cork Regional Hospitals. The matter of its final disposal is being examined by my Department at present. No radioactive waste from Irish hospitals has been exported and there is no question of it being disposed of in domestic tipheads.
