Vol. 376 No. 9

Written Answers. - Tourism Development.

24.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the proposals which have been drawn up so far to work towards the creation of an additional 25,000 jobs in the tourism area, as provided for in the Programme for National Recovery; when it is expected that the first of these jobs will be created; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

On 3 May the Government introduced a crash programme for the development of the Irish tourism industry. They have followed this up with a series of initiatives particularly on access transport. The success of these policies is reflected in the substantial increase in tourist numbers this year. As a result, Bord Fáilte estimate that an extra 3,500 jobs were created in tourism in 1987. I intend to follow up these initiatives with a development programme for the sector which will be published after full consultation with all those involved in the tourism industry.
