asked the Minister for the Environment if he will indicate for 1988 the number of major improvements-new roads which will be carried out to the national primary road system; and if he will provide for each county and county borough the following information: (a) the national primary roads to be improved i.e. N7, N11 etc. (b) the location of the improvement-new road (c) the length of the improvement-new road (d) the cost of the improvement-new road (e) the commencement date for the improvement-new road (f) the employment directly involved in the works and (g) whether the work will be done by direct labour or by private contractor; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - National Primary Road Network.
Provision has been made in the 1988 road grant allocations for expenditure this year on 22 major road schemes which, when completed, will form part of the network of national primary routes. Details of these schemes, in respect of which grant allocations totalling £51 million have been notified for this year, are set out in the following table.
Details of direct employment on individual schemes are not available in my Department. It is estimated, however, that the direct employment content of this expenditure will be about 1,200 man-year-jobs, apart from the spin-off employment. A further £16 million has been allocated this year in respect of other major road projects.
Policy regarding the carrying out of future major schemes by contract or direct labour will be set out in the blueprint for road development which I intend to publish within the next few months.
