asked the Minister for Justice if he will give for the years 1983-1986 the following information in regard to women prisoners: (a) the average daily prison population (b) the average number strip searched per month (c) the total number of strip searches under the following categories: (1) attendance at court for remand, trial, and bail (2) leaving prison on home leave or on pre-release programmes (3) first admission on sentence (4) final discharge (5) first admission on remand or while awaiting trial and (6) miscellaneous, non-categorisable searches (d) the total number of strip searches per year (e) the monthly average strip searches per prisoner searched (f) the records which are required to be kept on such searches (g) the administrative or other regulations under which such searches are carried out (h) the regulations, if any, which govern the searches of body cavities (i) the respect, if any, in which the regulations for strip searching differ as between male and female prisoners (j) the procedures which are laid down in regard to the conduct of strip searches of women prisoners and (k) the training which prison officers receive in regard to the conduct of strip searches.

The information requested by the Deputy is being compiled in so far as it is ascertainable and will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.
