Vol. 377 No. 8

Written Answers. - Voluntary Redundancy Scheme.

46.

asked the Minister for Education if she has had any consultation with principals of second level schools in respect of recruiting replacement staff for those teachers on their staffs who opt to take and are granted voluntary redundancy.

School management authorities have been advised that the voluntary redundancy scheme for teachers in secondary, community and comprehensive schools will apply only to the extent that the number of teaching posts in excess of quota cannot be eliminated by other means such as natural wastage, redeployment, career breaks, job sharing. Voluntary redundancy can be allowed only on the basis that the teacher concerned will be replaced through redeployment if the school is within quota, and will not be replaced if the school is above quota.

In deciding which teachers are to be offered the redundancy terms, my Department will bear in mind the educational needs of the school based on the recommendation of the school management, the circumstances of particular teachers and overall cost.

Details of the voluntary redundancy scheme for vocational teachers are to be circulated to vocational education committees shortly.
