Vol. 378 No. 2

Written Answers. - Community Policing.

10.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will review in conjunction with the Garda Síochána the whole question of community policing in order that additional resources can be deployed to this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

21.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of the community policing scheme which is currently being implemented by the Garda; the way in which it differs from the neighbourhood watch scheme; if the neighbourhood watch schemes will remain in operation; the resources which are being allocated for the new scheme, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 10 and 21 together.

I would refer the Deputies to my reply to Question No. 72 on 11 February 1988 about the community policing schemes recently introduced on a pilot basis in eight areas of the Northern Division of the Dublin Metropolitan Area. The areas in which these schemes are operating are Kilbarrack East, Kilbarrack West, Finglas South, Corduff, Blakestown/ Fortlawn, Darndale/Belcamp, Priorswood Clonshaugh and Edenmore.

The neighbourhood watch scheme is essentially a crime prevention programme which enlists the voluntary help of the community to co-operate with the Garda Síochána. It will, of course, continue to operate as heretofore. In fact, one of the duties of gardaí assigned to community policing schemes will be to consult on a regular basis with the area and street co-ordinators of local neighbourhood watch schemes.
