Vol. 378 No. 2

Written Answers. - Race Relations Legislation.

42.

asked the Minister for Justice if he intends to introduce legislation in relation to race relations, especially in view of the recent reports on the increase in support for the Nazi Party in Ireland.

An interdepartmental committee chaired from the Office of the Attorney General have had under consideration the steps which may be necessary to enable Ireland to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination. Further consideration will be given to the question of introducing any race relations legislation that may be required, as soon as the committee's report is received.

Article 20 of the United Nations Covenant on Civil and Political Rights that the advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred should be prohibited and the legislative implications of this provision have also been under consideration. Any legislative proposals which I may have in this respect will be announced in the ordinary way in due course.
