Vol. 378 No. 6

Written Answers. - Adult Literacy Scheme.

284.

asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the Blanchardstown adult literacy scheme, Dublin 15, has had to reduce its literacy classes from six hours spread over three nights to four hours spread over three nights because of cutbacks in the vocational education committee; that the saving to the vocational education committee is approximately two man hours per week, a total cost of about £14.50 per week; if, in the circumstances she will provide the small additional funds to allow the vocational education committee facilitate the continuation of the adult literacy scheme for six hours per week; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department are precluded under the terms of Government policy on public service staffing from sanctioning the appointment of a caretaker at the BRACE Centre, Blanchardstown, County Dublin.

Arrangements have, however, recently been made by County Dublin Vocational Education Committee to have the centre made available for the Blanchardstown adult literacy scheme for a total of 6½ hours per week in the following manner — 2½ hours on Wednesday evening and one hour each evening on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

The organisers of the scheme have also been informed by the committee that it is open to them to pursue the question of conducting their classes at any of the following schools in the Blanchardstown area — Coolmine Community School, Blakestown Community School or Corduff Community College.
