Vol. 378 No. 7

Written Answers. - Bovine Tannery Industry.

56.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number and location of persons at present employed in the full bovine tannery industry in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that there is no full bovine tanning activity, that is, the processing of hides from raw to finished leather state in a fully integrated set-up in operation here at present. There are, however, two projects, located at Portlaw and Carrick-on-Suir respectively, making finished leather from the crust stage, semi-processed hides, and employing approximately nine people in total. A further project, located at Dungarvan, engaged in the processing of hides from the raw to wet-blue and crust stage, employs approximately 36 people.
