Vol. 378 No. 8

Written Answers. - Radiation Hazards.

23.

asked the Minister for Energy if the Government have completed their review of the legal options open to them to limit Ireland's exposure to radiation hazards associated with the operation of British nuclear installations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The review of possible legal proceedings open to the Government in relation to reducing the country's exposure to radiation hazards from nuclear installations abroad is continuing. The review involves both legal and technical considerations. A decision to initiate proceedings on a particular issue will be taken if this is considered to be appropriate and I do not wish to make any further statement at this stage. As the House is aware, the Government have already taken steps to intervene in the Cattenom case brought before the European Court of Justice under Article 37 of the Euratom Treaty.
