Vol. 378 No. 8

Written Answers. - Electricity Prices.

24.

asked the Minister for Energy if he will consider requesting the ESB to reduce electricity prices to industries on the western seaboard counties to alleviate some of the economic disadvantages caused by long distances from seaports and the consequent additional transport costs.

In accordance with the Electricity (Supply) Acts the ESB are required to ensure that its rates are not preferential or discriminatory. This precludes the ESB from setting tariffs based on geographic location. In any event I feel that there are more appropriate means of alleviating any economic disadvantage incurred by industry as a result of its location. The Deputy will no doubt be aware that the IDA, SFADCo and Údarás na Gaeltachta offer various incentives to industry setting up in the western regions.
