Vol. 378 No. 10

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Horse Industry.

11.

asked the Taoiseach the number of people employed in the horse industry, specifying if possible the numbers in each section thereof that is (a) breeding, (b) racing and (c) hunting.

Regular statistical information of the type requested by the Deputy is not available on a comprehensive basis. Partial information can be derived from the census of population where horse racing is distinguished as a separate activity. In 1981 some 1,075 persons at work were coded to horse racing on the basis of the specific information returned on the census forms. All other persons involved in any aspect of the horse industry (breeding, schooling etc.), where horse racing was not mentioned, are included elsewhere e.g. with "farming and stock rearing on farms" or under "other recreational activities".

In view of the importance of this industry, I suggest that a change in the compilation of the statistics should now be put in train so that we would have accurate statistics as to the numbers employed in the different sectors of the industry.

I would certainly agree that the area is on the grey side but I can only answer for the figure derived from the census which is based on self-description in the census taken in 1981. Corresponding figures in the 1986 census will be available in about five to six months time.

May I repeat my request to the Minister of State, in view of his agreement with me that it is a grey area statistically, will he initiate studies to ensure that that grey area is eliminated so that we can get precise statistics on this important industry?

I will certainly be very glad to have that considered.
