Vol. 379 No. 2

Written Answers. - Supply of Medical Materials.

83.

asked the Minister for Health if he will investigate allegations made by a person (details supplied) in Dublin 1 that her mother was not supplied with sufficient medical supplies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The allegations in this case relate to the supply of incontinence wear to the mother of the person concerned. A public health nurse with specialist knowledge of incontinence requisites made specific recommendations regarding the needs of this patient. The Eastern Health Board was at all times prepared to supply incontinence materials in accordance with these professional recommendations.

It is understood that the person concerned declined to provide public health nursing staff with access to her mother. She did, however, accept receipt of the incontinence materials supplied by the health board, arising from the professional recommendations referred to. Due to the refusal of the person to admit the board's nursing staff to the family residence, it was decided that the person could arrange to collect the incontinence materials for her mother at the local health centre, which is close to the family residence. She agreed with this suggestion and secured incontinence materials accordingly.

A senior public health nurse kept in close communication with the family general practitioner with a view to monitoring the needs of the patient. The case was therefore kept under continual review.
