Details of the numbers of VEC teachers applying to be considered for voluntary redundancy are not yet available as the closing date for the receipt of completed application forms in my Department is March 31 1988.
County Carlow Vocation Education Committee was allocated 72.3 whole teacher equivalents by my Department in respect of approved full-time day courses for the 1986-87 school year. The authorised allocation for 1987-88 was 71.4 wholetime teacher equivalents, a reduction of 0.9 wholetime teacher equivalents.
It is estimated that the resultant cost saving to my Department in the 1987-88 school session is of the order of £10,000.

asked the Minister for Education the reduction in the number of VEC teachers in Kilkenny city and county since January, 1987; the resultant reduction in cost to her Department and the number of VEC teachers in Kilkenny who have applied for redundancy.
The allocation authorised by my Department to County Kilkenny VEC for approved full-time day courses for the 1986-87 session was 126.8 wholetime teacher equivalents and for 1987-88 the authorised allocation was 118.6 wholetime teacher equivalents including five supernumerary posts. Since the 1987-88 authorised allocation reflects the fact that eight of the VEC teachers were assimiliated onto the staff of the new community school in Castlecomer as from the commencement of the 1987-88 session, there was effectively no reduction in cost to my Department.
