Vol. 379 No. 2

Written Answers. - Primary School Teachers.

94.

asked the Minister for Education the reduction in the numbers of primary school teachers in Kilkenny city and county from January 1987 to date; the resultant reduction cost to the State; and the number of teachers in Kilkenny city and county who have applied for redundancy.

The number of national school teachers in County Kilkenny has decreased from 433 in January 1987 to 420 at present. It would not be possible to quantify any resultant reduction in cost to the State without the expenditure of an inordinate amount of staff time.

A total of 40 national teachers in County Kilkenny have applied for the voluntary redundancy-early retirement scheme. I should point out that there is no guarantee that any teacher who has applied for redundancy will be offered it, and this was made quite clear in the scheme document.

asked the Minister for Education the reduction in the numbers of primary school teachers in Carlow town and county from January 1987 to date; the resultant reduction cost to the State; and the number of teachers in Carlow who have applied for redundancy.

The number of national school teachers in County Carlow has increased from 264 in January 1987 to 265 at present. A total of 27 national teachers in County Carlow have applied for the voluntary redundancy-early retirement scheme. I should point out that there is no guarantee that any teacher who has applied for redundancy will be offered it, and this was made quite clear in the scheme document.
