Vol. 379 No. 9

Written Answers. - National Lottery Grant Aid.

131.

asked the Minister for Education if St. Xavier's hurling and football club, Waterford city meet the criterion laid down to qualify for grant aid under the national lottery; and if so, when payment of same will issue.

My Department have not received any formal application from St. Xavier's hurling and football club, Waterford city.

Before the availability of a grant for the project in question can be considered, it will be necessary for the organisation to formally apply for grant aid under the Department's capital grant scheme for the construction of recreational facilities. Copies of the application forms and conditions have been sent to the Deputy.

I must stress, however, that the demand for the relevant funds are such that financial assistance cannot be presumed in respect of any application even where it complies with all the necessary criteria.

132.

asked the Minister for Education the steps she proposes to take to ensure that universities implement the recommendations of the Education and Training Commitee of the Medical Council of Ireland; and also to ensure that they improve the general standard of communication skills with regard to the doctor and patient and the doctor and the public.

Recommendations of the Education and Training Committee of the Medical Council would be a matter in the first instance for the council itself. The Medical Council is required under section 35 of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978, to satisfy itself as to the suitability of medical education and training being provided by bodies in the State recognised by the council for this purpose. It would be a matter for the Medical Council, in relation to any recommendations of the Education and Training Committee which the council adopted, to communicate with the authorities of such recognised bodies in the matter of the implementation of the recommendations concerned. I have no function in this matter as Minister for Education. It would, however, be open to the Deputy to contact the Registrar, The Medical Council, 8 Lower Hatch Street, Dublin 2, for further information in this matter.
