Vol. 380 No. 2

Written Answers. - Smokeless Fuels.

37.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will supply details on the smoke emission of the main fuels available for the domestic fuel market; and which of these will qualify as smokeless for the purpose of smokeless fuel zones.

No formal Irish standards exist for smokeless fuels. To remedy this situation, Eolas have agreed to devise standards and assess the suitability of fuels (and appliances) for use in special control areas established under Part IV of the Air Pollution Act, 1987. I have arranged for the setting up of a working group of technical experts from my Department and Eolas to recommend the best approach having regard to the range of fuels available, or likely to become readily available, on the Irish market. I understand that the group have had a number of meetings and will be reporting to me shortly on the outcome of their deliberations.
