Vol. 380 No. 2

Written Answers. - Kildare VEC Teachers.

107.

asked the Minister for Education (a) the total number of teachers within the vocational education system who have applied for early retirement/voluntary redundancy in County Kildare and (b) the schools likely to be affected by such redundancies/early retirement; and if she has any plans to alleviate the likely difficulties arising in the event of her approving redundancies/ early retirements sought.

(a) My Department have received applications under the voluntary redundancy scheme from 23 teachers employed by the County Kildare Vocational Education Committee.

(b) Vocational teachers are appointed by each vocational education committee to its educational scheme as a whole and the assignment of teachers to individual schools is a matter for the committee. The question of the staffing, in individual schools, will be a matter for consideration by County Kildare Vocational Education Committee within the context of that committee's approved allocation of teaching staff for the school session 1988/89. The question of the possible difficulties that may arise under the revised pupil-teacher ratio is being discussed at present in the post-primary review committee under the aegis of the central review committee of the Programme for National Recovery.
