asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of Irish embassies and missions abroad; and whether it is intended to maintain the present number.

At the present time, Ireland maintains a total of 39 resident missions overseas. This number is made up as follows: 29 Embassies; 3 Permanent Representations; 5 Consulates General, staffed by career officers; 2 Development Co-operation Offices. The embassy in Nairobi is in the process of being closed in accordance with the Government decision relating to the achievement of savings on overseas representation expenditure in 1988.
