Vol. 382 No. 5

Written Answers. - Third World Debt Burden.

30.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will encourage other donor nations to follow the good example set by President Mitterrand of France to reduce their debts to the debt-ridden Third World countries.

I welcome the initiatives which have been taken or are proposed by President Mitterrand and other donor nations aimed at alleviating the debt burden of the poorest developing countries. I believe that debt relief measures are essential to permit the Governments of these countries to work towards a better standard of living for their peoples. I will continue to press for a more sympathetic attitude to the plight of the poorest highly-indebted countries.
