Vol. 382 No. 5

Written Answers. - Aid to Kampuchea.

39.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the appalling problems of hunger and deprivation still facing the people of Kampuchea, he will consider the inclusion of Kampuchea in Ireland's Overseas Development Aid Programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland has provided some humanitarian assistance on occasion in the past to the people of Kampuchea (Cambodia) both through non-Governmental organisations and through the appropriate UN agencies. The European Community also continues to provide humanitarian and emergency assistance to the people of Kampuchea and we, of course, participate in this through our membership of the Community.

Apart from such humanitarian assistance and small projects elsewhere, the greater part of Ireland's Overseas Development Programme is allocated to four priority countries — Lesotho, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia.

It would not be possible for us in present circumstances to add other countries to this priority list.
