Vol. 382 No. 5

Written Answers. - Belfast Economic Aid.

40.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will give details of the proposed economic package for Belfast currently being considered; the areas of Belfast to which the package will apply; the form which the economic aid will take; if, as part of the consideration of the package, the Irish Government has urged the British Government to assist also the proposed building of a luxury liner at Harland and Wolff shipyard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The communique issued at the conclusion of the Anglo-Irish Inter-governmental Conference on 17 June stated that:

"On the social and economic problems of West Belfast, which the conference had discussed in detail at its two previous meetings, the Secretary of State said he hoped shortly to make a statement about further measures to improve the performance of the public sector, and stimulate the involvement of the private and voluntary sectors, in areas of Belfast characterised by exceptionally low employment and poor rates of economic activity. These measures would begin in the current financial year and would involve action to enhance employment opportunities and to improve the conditions of life in these areas. The Irish side welcomed the prospect of specific measures to address this serious problem".

Details of the measures to be introduced will be set out in the promised statement by Mr. King.

The issue of financial assistance to the Harland and Wolff shipyard for the construction of a luxury liner has already been covered in the response given to the Deputy's question taken on 17 May 1988. The position has not changed since then.
