Vol. 382 No. 5

Written Answers. - ESB Cables in Dublin.

104.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make an order to ensure that as part of the western parkway between the Galway Road and the Navan Road in Dublin all ESB cables shall be underground, or where there are bridges under cover on aesthetic and safety grounds; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

113.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his decision, under section 10 of the Local Government (Roads and Motorways) Act, 1974, to allow the ESB to erect an overhead 38 KV power line along the eastern boundary of the western parkway motorway, at Castleknock, Dublin 15, was influenced by the extra cost which might be involved if this cable were laid underground; if so, if he will give details of this extra cost; if, prior to making his decision he took all environmental factors into account; if he has satisfied himself that the groups which were in contact with his department fully represented the views of the community in Castleknock; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am taking Questions Nos. 104 and 113 together.

In considering the application for my consent under section 10 of the Local Government (Roads and Motorways) Act, 1974 to the relocation of an existing 38 KV overhead distribution line at Castleknock, I took into account all relevant aspects of the case, including the views of the local groups which lodged objections with me and the views of the ESB. The question of the additional cost of undergrounding the line, which was estimated by the ESB at £235,000, was not the determining factor.

I have no further functions to exercise in this matter at this stage.
