Vol. 382 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Kildare Water Supply Pollution.

105.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the pollution of the water supply by nitrates at Ballyroe, Athy, County Kildare; the steps, if any, he intends to take to end this pollution; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Kildare County Council applied last March for funding under the sanitary services small schemes programme to connect this water supply scheme to an alternative source. The existing supply was stated to be polluted but no details of the type or source of pollution were provided, and the proposal was rated by the council as priority No. 5 on the list of five proposals submitted. It was not possible, in the circumstances, to make a grant towards the improvement of the scheme. However, it remains a matter for the sanitary authority to ensure that the water supply meets the standards set in the European Communities (Quality of Water Intended for Human Consumption) Regulations, 1988, and to take any necassary measures for its improvement.
