Vol. 383 No. 7

Written Answers. - Use of Chemicals.

74.

asked the Minister for the Marine if his attention has been drawn to the extensive use of chemicals such as malachite green formaline and nuvan in salmon farming to kill disease and parasites; and if he will comment on the fears of many people that these chemicals are suspected of causing cancer.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Deputy Michael D. Higgins' question in relation to Nuvan given yesterday, 2 November, 1988.

The chemicals referred to are used to treat infections/parasites in farmed fish. They are only used intermittently and are used at low concentrations. I am not aware of any scientific analysis that established that the use of these chemicals, in conformity with established practice, is a factor in cancer in humans.
