Vol. 383 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Transport to Special Schools.

25.

asked the Minister for Education the grants which are available for the provision of school transport to special schools for mentally and physically handicapped children.

The transport system catering for children attending mentally and physically handicapped special schools is designed to alleviate the hardship encountered in transporting these children to their respective schools.

However, there are instances where pupils cannot be accommodated on one of the existing services. In these circumstances the Department may offer a transport grant up to a maximum of £600. The amount payable depends on the distance involved and the attendance of the pupil concerned. The grant, if accepted, is paid in arrears.
