Vol. 385 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospitals Air Pollution.

32.

asked the Minister for Health whether, in view of the obligation of hospitals under the Air Pollution Act to use the best practical means to cut air pollution, he will consider making capital allocations to hospitals where incinerators being used by them are creating emissions of smoke and gases at unacceptable levels.

My Department are currently examining as a matter of urgency the question of incinerating hospital waste in such a manner as to minimise air pollution. This examination involves complex technical considerations including an evaluation of a number of options for the disposal of this waste. When the results of this examination are available, I will consider the question of any necessary capital funding.
