National teachers are awarded the diploma in education after completion of one year's continuous satisfactory service. Those whose service is not continuous are awarded the diploma after completion of 300 days satisfactory service provided this includes at least two periods of 60 consecutive days. Service given as substitute teachers and in temporary posts is reckonable for this purpose.
These arrangements were introduced on the recommendations of a working party representative of my Department and the INTO which completed its task in 1987. I will be keeping these arrangements under review within my Department.
