Vol. 389 No. 3

Written Answers. - May Day Public Holiday.

59.

asked the Minister for Labour if the Government will consider making May Day a public holiday, especially as workers in this country have fewer holidays than workers in most other EC countries; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no plans to declare any additional public holidays at this time.

The priorities of the Government relating to employment are concentrated on implementing policies which will lead to the preservation of existing jobs and the creation of new jobs. Declaring any extra public holiday would directly increase employment costs, and this would not be compatible with Government strategy.
