The Department of Communications, which was established in January 1984, combined the previous Transport portfolio and that of the residual Department of Posts and Telegraphs following the assignment of responsibility for the operation of the postal and telecommunications services to An Post and Bord Telecom Éireann respectively.
In March 1987, following a reallocation of ministerial functions the Department of Communications retained responsibility for postal, telecommunications, radio and broadcasting matters only.
