Vol. 392 No. 1

Written Answers. - Arterial Drainage.

49.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Finance the plans he has for arterial drainage work; the work he expects to be carried out by his Department in 1990; and if he will make a statement on the impact of environmental studies on arterial drainage schemes.

The Estimates for next year have not yet been finalised.

At present there are three drainage schemes at the construction stage and some 40 drainage and embankment schemes on maintenance and subject to the necessary finances being available, it is intended to continue this programme in 1990. In addition, there is a number of schemes at the design stage.

In accordance with established practice, all schemes are subjected to detailed studies to determine their effects on the environment with a view to minimising these effects. Indeed, this appraisal is a continuous process applicable also to schemes throughout their construction, and can lead to the curtailment of works in certain sensitive areas.
