Vol. 392 No. 1

Written Answers. - Moneys Due from UN.

66.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will indicate the moneys which are due to the Government from the United Nations in respect of fees and payments in connection with Irish contingents serving in United Nations peace-keeping and other observer missions; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As at 31 July 1989, a total shortfall of about £18.2 million in reimbursable entitlements from the United Nations had accumulated in respect of participation by personnel of the Defence Forces in peace-keeping operations in Lebanon and Cyprus. Of this amount £17.5 million relates to involvement in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) since May 1978. The remaining shortfall of £0.7 million arises out of participation in the United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), which commenced in April 1964.

The question of securing repayment of the amounts outstanding is pursued on a continuous basis with the United Nations using all appropriate means for the purpose.
