Vol. 392 No. 4

Written Answers. - Provision of Marinas.

71.

asked the Minister for the Marine if his Department have undertaken any research to determine the optimum number of and location of marinas in the State; the assistance available from his Department for private and local government initiatives in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The optimum number of marinas cannot be decided in the abstract but will have to take account of the development of the market and other relevant factors. The Department of the Marine are pursuing a policy of facilitating private investment in marinas and will encourage those initiatives which can enhance Ireland's tourism and leisure facilities. It will support any organisation which is prepared to raise the level of investment required and to devote the time and effort necessary for the development of marinas at suitable locations. Due to other development priorities the Department is unable at present to provide direct financial assistance towards the construction of marinas.
