Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Slane (Meath) Traffic Lights.

45.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will authorise the erection of pedestrian hazard lights at Slane national school, County Meath, having regard to the fact that the school is situated on a dangerous bend on a national primary route.

It is assumed that the Deputy is referring to the special sign with flashing amber lights which was introduced on a pilot basis with a view to enhancing the safety of children going to schools. Initially, this sign was provided in four selected areas. The pilot exercise was subsequently extended to allow for the provision of a sign at one location in each local authority area. For the purpose of this exercise, my Department agreed to meet up to 50 per cent of the cost.

Local authorities who have installed the sign have been requested to submit reports on the sign in terms of its effectiveness and the criteria laid down for the provision of the sign. Pending receipt of the reports and completion of the assessment of the pilot exercise, it is not proposed to authorise the provision of the sign at additional locations.
