Vol. 393 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Projects.

46.

asked the Minister for Education when the construction of the new secondary school in Newcastle West, County Limerick, will commence; and the estimated completion date.

The proposed new secondary school in Newcastle West is one of four projects included in the design, finance and construct pilot scheme currently being processed by my Department. This scheme is being treated as a priority and selected developers will shortly be invited to submit proposals for the project in question. I am not in a position at present to indicate exactly when construction will commence.

asked the Minister for Education if she has sanctioned the building of the new school for St. Kevin's Community College, Quarryvale, Dublin 22; and the steps she is taking to overcome the accommodation problems which will arise each year in the interim.

A decision to establish St. Kevin's community college as a new post primary school in north Clondalkin was taken in 1986. The school is at present accommodated in the old vocational school building in Lucan to which the pupils have free transport.

The present position regarding St. Kevin's is that in view of the considerable amount of capital expenditure required to provide the school, the strict limitation of funding available to my Department and the large number of cases requiring urgent attention, all aspects of the project are the subject of a detailed investigation before commitments can be entered into.

Officials of my Department have had discussions with representatives of County Dublin Vocational Education Committee aimed at resolving these issues. The VEC is to consider the matter at its next meeting and will then give its views to my Department. I have also met representatives of St. Kevin's Community College.

I accept that the present accommodation arrangements are not satisfactory. I would hope that a satisfactory resolution will emerge from the discussion I have mentioned.
